I have passed a three year point in my life. I have reached my third year....with absolutely no sickness in my life. Now that is good for anyone, but since I am over 60 it is fantastic!!

To top it all off, I am nearly two and one half years without being on medications of any kind. I believe it was late October or early November of 2006 when my doctor allowed me to stop taking my blood pressure and cholesterol medications. How exciting is that!!

So here I am today...no colds....no sinus infections....only the joy of having great health. I have learned that by feeding my body with the nutrients it really needs, it will take care of itself. That if I drink lots of pure fresh water, it will more readily flush my system of bad things. That if I use top quality food supplements, the right nutrients will get to the right places at the right time.

Yes....Optimal Good Health is really cool!! I would love to share that with everyone!! Just ask me. If you have the desire, I can give you the directions and roadmaps. Join me in the land of Optimal Health today!!

Our Pets and Children in Danger

In a recent letter from Dr. Stephan Chaney of the University of North Carolina I learned that the Environmental Working Group, based in Washington D. C. recently took blood and urine samples from a number of dogs and cats in the Virginia suburbs. The samples were analyzed for 70 industrial chemicals and pollutants. The tests included heavy metals, fire retardants, stain removers, and others. Chemicals that have been in some way linked to cancers, thyroid problems, neurological problems, and other disorders. They discovered high levels of the toxic chemicals in almost every pet tested - often at a 5 - 23 fold higher level than found in humans.

The red flags should be flying high now. Who else in our homes spends time close to the floor like our pets? I am talking about the floor we clean with toxic chemicals on a frequent basis. Additionally, I know that there are many chemicals that as the fumes come off they are heavier than air and head down instead of up. So, now we more or less have a toxic soup in our homes for our beloved pets and children to innocently breathe in as they romp and play.

Its time to take action, and think about how we can correct this problem. Why take chances with the people and pets that we love and care for? The easiest thing to do...change to non-toxic, non-polluting, environmentally safe cleaning products. High quality products like Shaklee's Get Clean products are not only safe, but they are also highly concentrated and save you tons of money. Clean up the air in your home now. Help make your immediate environment a better place, and know that your children and pets will be much better off and be assured of a much healthier life.

A Solid Foundation

Are we getting enough protein, and how important is that?

Some time ago I attended a presentation by a pharmacist of the old school who was an expert on herbal remedies as opposed to synthetic drugs. One statement that he made that day has stuck with me. He said that protein was the foundation for all cells, vitamins feed the cells, and herbs stimulate the cells. It is generally believed that protein metabolism is the most important factor in maintaining good health. So what exactly is protein necessary for in our bodies? I provide a list for you here, not necessarily complete but it should convince you that protein is important.

every cell in the body

all muscles

all tissues

all ligament

all bone structure

bone marrow

brain function

healthy hair and fingernails

healthy heart

liver function

lung tissues and mucous membranes

hormone production

antibody formation

cell enzyme production

red blood cell production

white blood cell production

blood plasma

Okay, so we can agree that we all need protein, so how should we get it? We have been conditioned to think that we should eat lots of meat, good red meat, and so we do. The facts that go along with that diet may make you wonder. Eating meat, high in fat as a rule gives us:

high cholesterol

traces of antibiotics

traces of growth hormones

traces of agricultural chemicals

increased risk of heart disease

increased risk of some cancers

may increase the need for calcium

The other choice for protein would be a vegetable source such as a high quality soy protein which has been organically grown, water washed and cold processed so as not to destroy the live enzymes. Some of the benefits of this type of protein would be:

no cholesterol

lowers cholesterol

no agricultural chemicals

lowers risk of heart disease

lowers risk of cancer

acts as an antioxidant

helps with PMS and Menopause

boosts immunity

lowers the risk of gallstones and kidney stones

lowers the risk of diabetes

lowers the risk of osteoporosis

Okay, now the ball is in your park. You need to take the information and use it to make the best decisions for your good health. Sure, you can eat meat once in awhile but, think about cutting back and getting the majority of your protein from a high quality vegetable source. I know that my own health has improved drastically because I made that choice. My weight is down, I am off medications for blood pressure and cholesterol and I never intend to go back. Take some time to seriously think about this. Remember, YOU are responsible for achieving optimal health. Your doctors job (which is overwhelming) is to treat folks who are not so healthy. They work overtime keeping the population in the neutral zone. You need protein, so make sure you are getting the best possible to give the cells in your body a solid foundation.

Falling Off the Wagon

Thanksgiving was its normal self. More food than people should eat in a sitting, knowing what will happen when you do, and ignoring common sense.

We started out the day with having some family members for a late breakfast. Of course Thanksgiving day being special...we could not just have a normal breakfast. I made some sausage gravy using a very good, but very fattening recipe. Biscuits are a requirement when you have sausage gravy, so I made some of those as well. Naturally, every package of refrigerator or frozen biscuits are laced with trans fats among other evil things, but I did not have time to make home made. We had some scrambled eggs on the side. Not normal eggs of course. These were loaded up with some Cajun spices, black pepper, onions and pepper jack cheese. Oh yes, there were some cinnamon buns too, for a nice lil breakfast dessert. All very tasty to be sure, but OMG this is not the way to start out your day especially if the meal takes place at about 10 in the morning.

Fast forward to the real Thanksgiving meal. (Starting at 1:30PM, so the huge breakfast was still digesting.) There was turkey, dressing, baked sweet potatoes with garlic, green bean casserole, two types of cranberries, bread and butter and of course gravy. I ate so much (totally abnormal) that I felt more stuffed than the turkey was and started to develop a headache and then had a sneezing frenzy as my sinuses went crazy.

Wow.....this was not going well. Next came the pies, pumpkin and pecan with whipped cream. Of course I could not just eat one...I had to try them both. Even though I said a little of each I was delivered two regular slices. Oh well...I shoveled them down and then limped off to the TV room to watch some football. My team won...but I was sure paying the price for having over done the eating.

I somehow managed to survive the rest of the day without eating any more food, and woke up this morning to have my protein shake and supplements for breakfast. Ahhhhhhhhhh now that's more like it, I feel better already. Lunch was some leftovers from the day before. Since we had only provided the veggies that was what we had for leftovers. Hmmmm not bad at all....why did I have to eat all that other stuff Thanksgiving day?

Anyway, I have climbed back up on the wagon, and things are back to normal, though I may have gained a couple of pounds that will need to go away again. From now on, I think I will strap myself into the wagon so I don't fall off again. I used to eat that way all the time, so it is understandable why I was obese and unhealthy. I don't want to go back there, so though Thanksgiving was nice overall...it also re-taught me something about eating the right things in reasonable proportions. I have seen the light once again and will keep on keeping on!!

Dinner tonight....a nice fresh salad with organic lettuce, avocado, tomato and cucumber with maybe a little bit of goat cheese and some light vinaigrette dressing. I may spurge a bit and throw in a slice of toasted Ezekiel bread. Normal is good!!

Should Diabetes be a Concern?

Let's look at some of the facts regarding diabetes. In America approximately 24 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes and the American Diabetes Association estimates there may be another 6 million with the disease that don't yet know it. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, kidney disease and amputations. Diabetes is rapidly becoming one of the major public health crises of the current century, and it keeps on growing.

There are three types of diabetes:

Type 1 - Usually diagnosed in children, teens and young adults and likely caused by an autoimmune response which destroys certain cells in the pancreas so they cannot produce insulin.

Type 2 - Most common form and also the most preventable and treatable. Here the pancreas cannot keep up with the demand for insulin and blood sugars rise. Overweight people and those who are inactive are most likely to develop this type.

Gestational - A complication of pregnancy in women who experience excessive weight gain during pregnancy. This type usually dissipates after childbirth, but the women who have it are more at risk for developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

In cases of type 1 and type 2, it is essential that victims eat healthfully and control their caloric intake. If this is not done, there can eventually be damage to nerves and blood vessels, and an increased risk of serious and life threatening complications like:

Heart disease and stroke

Blindness

Kidney disease

Amputations

So....the bottom line here is this: Diabetes should be a concern. We need to watch what we eat and what we feed our children. Eat less processed, fast, nutritionally depleted foods and more fresh fruits and vegetables and lean meats and fish. We also need to get up off our fannies and get more exercise. If nothing else...walk walk walk. Keep that weight down, keep your metabolism up, and drink plenty of pure fresh water to keep the bad things flushed out of your system.

Type 2 diabetes is very very preventable, so make an effort to do those things that you should. The Good Lord made our bodies to use certain nutrients to make us strong and resistant to disease. It is our job to make the right choices and ensure that we ingest those nutrients, and avoid as much as possible modern, nutritionally empty junk foods. Always remember, that by doing the right things....the life you save may very well be your own!!

Who is Responsible for the Environment?

I have a hard time figuring out exactly who to listen to when it comes to the environment. I have pretty much decided that the environmental movement on the left hand side is pretty much based on emotion and little science. I suppose the right hand side may lean a bit towards making someone a buck or two. I am absolutely positive that the government and politicians are simply in the business of pandering to special interests and mostly talks the talk, but provides little else. We are being silly when we vote for someone because they are the "one"....that will save our environment and clean up the world.

I remember that years ago we were told that the freon used in our air conditioners was causing the ozone layer to disappear and that if something was not done....we were all doomed to a horrible death!! Of course the Government passed laws and that particular freon was removed and replaced with something else. However, I was a certified gas free engineer in the United States Navy at the time and knew without a doubt that freon was heavier than air. When I had to check for a freon leak I had to check the lowest areas of the space. This being the case, I have never been able to justify in my mind how this substance could get up to the ozone layer above the earth and destroy it!! To this day I have not been able to find anyone who could explain this to me, including a PHD from NASA Langley teaching a college course in biology I was taking. So, I am naturally very leery when I hear of new claims about what is destroying our environment this month.

To me it is simple. Each and every one of us should exercise common sense and not be wasteful. We can all do little things to improve our immediate environment and when we do them....we contribute to the improvement of the environment as a whole. We can use non- toxic highly concentrated cleaning products to clean our homes and offices saving money and improving our inside air quality. We can use cloth grocery bags which can be used over and over rather than plastic ones made from petroleum, or paper ones made from trees. We can use new fluorescent light bulbs which use far less energy than conventional ones and last a very long time as well. We can keep our homes in good repair caulking our windows, fixing water leaks, putting in storm doors and much more. We can turn the water off when brushing our teeth and shaving rather than letting it run. We can wash our dishes in a full dishwasher rather than by hand which uses more water. There are many many ways for each of us to do our part and little things done by many adds up to big things in a hurry. So, let's strive to do better little things, stop doing bad little things and it will all turn around to the betterment of all, probably more quickly than anyone might imagine.

As time goes on...I will be talking more about my views of environmental issues so stay tuned!!

What Are Kids Eating?

I remember that when I was growing up, and aware of what was going on, that we could only get fruits and vegetables in season. I remember the milk man delivering fresh milk, eggs, butter, and cheese. The milk even had cream floating on the top of the bottle. I remember the bread man coming and delivering his products. I also remember someones pet crow stopping by occasionally to open a bread box or two on a chosen porch and having a snack, after he stopped by and landed on our shoulders to chat as we waited for the school bus. We had very little processed foods to eat and got along just fine. We always had home cooked meals, and ate together as a family.

Fast forward to today. The stores are loaded with highly processed foods. Anything resembling fresh is usually found around the store perimeter, most items in the aisles are suspect. ( Careful label reading is required) The "fresh" fruits and vegetables are always available and come from all over the world. They are often picked green and sprayed with chemicals to speed ripening, or are waxed to make them look bright and shiny. Let's not forget the pesticides and other strange chemical things that used in their production. They just don't seem to have the flavor they used to have, and certainly their nutritional value is much lower than it used to be.

Many families today rarely eat a meal together. (Everyone is soooooo busy) Mom and Dad both work and it is so much easier to buy a frozen prepared meal to throw in the microwave. The foods that kids are given are loaded with sugar and little else. My grandson was listless and lacking energy one Saturday morning at his sister's volleyball game. I asked what he had for breakfast....and was told a pop tart!! I guess the sugar had burned out and since he had no good protein or other important nutrients he was dragging. My smallest granddaughters were visiting one Christmas and I was mixing up some whole grain pancakes for breakfast, to which I had added some soy protein, and one of them asked me what I was doing. I told her I was making pancakes. Her response was..."On the stove?" She had never had a pancake that did not come from the microwave oven. It really is scary!! More and more children today are obese, getting symptoms of diabetes early, being diagnosed with high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Some believe that kids of today may be the first generation to have a lesser longevity and quality of life than their parents.

The importance of giving our children nutritious meals cannot be overstated!! If they grow up eating properly, drinking pure water instead of sodas, and getting sufficient exercise and fresh air, they will likely carry those habits with them as they grow into adults. Our nation and future generations will be much healthier, and the burden on our health care system will be greatly reduced. It is important that we as parents and grandparents do the right thing!! Let's start feeding our children the real nutrition their bodies need to grow and become strong!! In this case simplicity and speed is most definitely not the answer!! Think about it....but not too long. DO THE RIGHT THING!!

Why Drink Water?

The health benefits of water are indisputable. According to the Mayoclinic.com : "Water is your body's principal chemical component, making up, on average, 60 percent of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.
Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don't have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired. "

On average the body uses about 2.5 liters of water every day for bodily functions. Next to Oxygen water is the most important nutrient required by the body, so we must constantly replenish what is lost. At the very minimum we should drink 6 to 8 cups of pure filtered water every single day if we are an average person with average levels of activity. Other factors such as physical activity, hot weather, and various health issues would give reason to consume even higher amounts of water.

Juice, coffee, tea, and soda DO NOT count!! Coffee and sodas can act as a diuretic, meaning that you could lose up to could lose up to 2 cups of water for every cup you drink.

A general guideline for consumption of water needs is 1/2 ounce of water for every pound of body weight. It should be consumed throughout the day, and it is not advisable to drink large amounts all at once. If you don't like water because it does not have a "certain taste" you might try occasionally adding a fresh lemon or lime juice for flavor. It is not recommended to drink copious amounts of water with or just after a meal, as this dilutes digestive juices.

Bottom line....if you love you.....give your body the water it needs daily. Don't dehydrate yourself. If you are thirsty you are already dehydrated, and that can cause you all kinds of health problems ranging from constipation, headaches, skin problems and much much more.

DRINK UP!! Water that is!!

Do I need to Supplement?

The below information comes from: “Why Do I Feel This Way” by Christine Gaber, RHN and Charlene Day, RDC. It is a great company with a 52 year plus track record that has never had a product recall in all those years. It is the first company in the world to be certified as climate neutral. Shaklee products have helped my wife and I to become far healthier as we move into our golden years. Shaklee invests time and money in testing and research more than any other company to ensure the safety and efficacy of its products. All of Shaklee's natural products are 100 percent unconditionally guaranteed. In this time of financial upheaval....Shaklee has had double digit growth for the past nine quarters. I could go on and on, there is much much more. But more than any other reason...I love Shaklee because Shaklee's products help the planet and its people to be healthier than they might be otherwise.

I am including here a testimonial from the mother of a special needs child she lovingly adopted, to make my point. I have removed names to protect them and their privacy, but the story is accurate never the less.

“Little Miss ******** was a premature baby born high on meth, codeine, cocaine, and alcohol, she weighed 12 pounds and wore size 6-9 month clothing at 2years and 8 months old; she had spots of hair grotesquely spotted on her head, and anorexia; her iron and protein were chronically low even with prescription formulas and vitamin/mineral supplements. The pediatrician wanted to place her on injections of vitamin B and iron. I did not want my baby to have to have injections and through prayer found Shaklee! ********* now weighs 28 1/2 pounds and is 3' 3" tall. Her hair is beautiful and she is a gorgeous healthy child. She takes the children's meal replacement shake mix in 8 ounces of undiluted canned milk every morning. (Sounds gross but she hates ice cream and would not drink ensure at all!) She also takes 2 Vita Lea Ocean Wonder chewables every morning, and the chewable vitamin C in the afternoon. She is now 4 1/2 years old, her intake needs monitored and encouraged for balanced diet but she is energetic, bright, and attends a preschool headstart program.”

The above story is one of many that we hear each and every day. I love hearing these stories and sharing them with others. Above all else, I love being able to help people solve their special problems by sharing the fantastic Shaklee products with them. It just does not get any better than this!! Helping others is always a very good thing.

How Did I Get Here?

In January of 2006, yours truly had a weight problem. Yep....its true!! Back then I weighed in at 250 pounds. I was also on medication for blood pressure and cholesterol control ( Not a suprise). I was prone to get sinus infections which seemed to find me several times during the year. Other than that, I was a pretty healthy guy. Okay..you can stop laughing now!!

During this time frame, I became involved with a group of folks doing a diet plan called Team 15, through a BNI(Business Network International) referral. Now Team 15 was developed by a nutritionist and used Shaklee protein and food supplements as the foundation of the plan. I knew that Shaklee makes great products because I was briefly involved about 30 years prior to this point in my life. So, I thought, lets give it a shot and see what happens. We started off with a detox program where we simply ate only fresh vegetables and fruits and drank a great deal of water (This was really tough). We next started adding in the protein and supplements, and "sensible meals". In other words....we re-learned how and what to eat. The results were nothing less than totally amazing.

Fast foward to today. I have shed 64 pounds from my previous 250 and have been able to maintain that fairly easily. I still drink about 3.5 quarts of water per day, because our bodies are 70% water and that is the fluid it needs. I was taken off my blood pressure and cholesterol medications in October of 2007 and never intend to go back. This probably upset my doctor since he had told me I would be on those medications for the rest of my life. Another great thing!! I have had no illness of any kind since starting this change in my life in January 2006. No more sinus infections, no colds, NOTHING!! This coming January 2009, will make it 3 years!! WOW!! An ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure. Think about it......if you want optimal health in your life then feed your body what it truly needs. If you do, I am confident that your health will improve drastically. Also your Doctor will have more time to spend with those who have not learned yet. Keep on keeping on!!

Everything Has a Beginning

This marks my entry into the wonderful world of blogging, and I am certain it will be an amazing or at least a very enlightening experience. It is my intent to share my ideas about health and wellness here with others, as one of my goals is to help the planet and people on it to become healthier. Medical science is a wonderful thing, and has extended our lives time and time again. However, due to the skyrocketing costs associated with standard health care, and the simple fact that doctors are working overtime to keep us in the neutral zone, we need to take a serious look at the value of nutrition in maintaining our health and we need to look seriously at prevention vs cure. In other words, optimal health is the responsibility of each and every one of us, and should be the goal of everyone. Due to my own experience and those of others...I am absolutely convinced that feeding the body what it really needs is the best step we can take in being responsible for our own good health. I will be sharing not only my own story with you here....but I am in hopes that others will join in and share their experiences and thoughts also.
